Complete Guide to Freshwater Aquarium Plants by Placement and Difficulty
Planted aquariums are more rewarding, more stable, and more visually striking than fish-only setups. Plants consume ammonia and nitrate, control algae, provide fish with cover, and create the most beautiful aquarium displays in the hobby. This guide covers every zone of the planted tank with species recommendations at every skill level.
Low-Tech vs High-Tech Planted Tanks
Before choosing plants, define your setup:
Low-tech: No CO2 injection; low to medium lighting; minimal fertilisation
- Best plants: mosses, anubias, java fern, crypts, vallisneria, bucephalandra
High-tech: CO2 injection; high-intensity LED; regular fertilisation
- Opens up: carpeting plants, red stem plants, demanding foreground species
Foreground Plants (Under 10 cm)
| Plant | Difficulty | CO2 | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Java moss (mat) | Very easy | No | Best for low-tech; natural look |
| Marsilea crenata | Easy | No | Small clover leaf; tolerates low light |
| Staurogyne repens | Moderate | Recommended | Compact, bushy; stays low |
| Monte Carlo | Moderate | Recommended | Round leaves; clean lawn effect |
| HC Cuba | Hard | Required | Smallest carpet plant; demanding |
| Dwarf hairgrass | Moderate | Helpful | Fine grass texture |
Midground Plants (10–25 cm)
| Plant | Difficulty | CO2 | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anubias nana | Very easy | No | Tie to driftwood; extremely hardy |
| Anubias nana petite | Very easy | No | Smaller form; great for shrimp tanks |
| Cryptocoryne wendtii | Easy | No | Many colour varieties; substrate plant |
| Cryptocoryne parva | Easy | No | Smallest crypt; very slow growing |
| Bucephalandra | Easy | Optional | Jewel-like leaves; thrives on hardscape |
| Java fern (narrow) | Very easy | No | Tie to driftwood; extremely hardy |
| Bolbitis heudelotii | Moderate | Recommended | Dark fern; attach to wood or rock |
| Alternanthera reineckii 'Mini' | Moderate | Recommended | Red accent plant; midground focal point |
Background Plants (25 cm+)
| Plant | Difficulty | CO2 | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vallisneria nana | Very easy | No | Spreads by runners; fast grower |
| Sagittaria subulata | Very easy | No | Grass-like; spreads densely |
| Cryptocoryne balansae | Easy | No | Tall, narrow crinkled leaves |
| Amazon sword | Easy | Root tabs | Large rosette; heavy root feeder |
| Hygrophila polysperma | Very easy | No | Fast-growing filler; beginner favourite |
| Rotala rotundifolia | Easy | Recommended | Pink tips; classic aquascape background |
| Ludwigia repens | Easy | Recommended | Red-green stems; very popular |
| Cabomba caroliniana | Moderate | Recommended | Feathery; dramatic when full |
| Rotala wallichii | Hard | Required | Fine hair-like red stems |
Floating Plants
| Plant | Difficulty | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Frogbit | Very easy | Cover, nitrate removal |
| Water sprite | Easy | Cover; can be planted or floating |
| Salvinia | Very easy | Fast grower; trim regularly |
| Duckweed | Very easy | Very fast; can take over — use carefully |
Epiphyte Plants (Attach to Hardscape)
Epiphytes — anubias, java fern, bucephalandra, bolbitis — do not root in substrate. They must be attached to driftwood, rocks, or other hardscape with fishing line, thread, or aquarium-safe glue.
Never bury the rhizome of anubias in substrate — it will rot. Attach the rhizome above the substrate surface.
Substrate Recommendations
| Setup | Substrate |
|---|---|
| Low-tech (crypts, anubias, java fern) | Plain gravel or sand + root tabs for heavy feeders |
| Mid-tech (most stem plants) | Active aquasoil or inert substrate + liquid fertiliser |
| High-tech (carpeting plants) | High-nutrient aquasoil (ADA Amazonia, Tropica) |
Lighting Guidelines
| Plant difficulty | Required PAR (at substrate) |
|---|---|
| Very easy / Low-tech | 15–25 PAR |
| Moderate | 30–50 PAR |
| Demanding / High-tech | 50–100+ PAR |
