Aquascaping Plant Placement Guide: Foreground, Midground, Background, and Accent Plants

The difference between a planted tank and a planted aquascape comes down almost entirely to plant placement. The same species arranged thoughtlessly look like a random green wall; arranged correctly they create depth, focal points, and the sense of a three-dimensional landscape.

The Three Core Zones

Foreground (0–10 cm)

The foreground is the area of substrate visible between the front glass and the midground planting. It is the zone closest to the viewer and the lowest in the tank.

Goals for the foreground:

• Stay low — species taller than 8–10 cm obscure the midground
• Create visual entry into the composition (lead the eye in from the front glass)
• Provide clear substrate contrast against the taller midground elements

Midground (10–25 cm)

The midground is the compositional centre of the aquascape — where the primary focal points, hardscape elements, and most visually interesting plant groupings are positioned.

Goals for the midground:

• House the primary focal point (main rock, driftwood, or specimen plant)
• Provide visual interest and texture variety
• Transition smoothly between foreground and background

Background (25 cm+)

Background plants form the rear "wall" of the aquascape — they should be tall enough to fill the upper portion of the tank, provide visual depth, and frame the midground composition.

Goals for the background:

• Fill the upper portion of the tank
• Create depth through perspective (plants partially behind other plants feel "further away")
• Contrast in texture or colour with midground plants

Accent Plants and Colour Focal Points

Accent plants are used sparingly to direct the eye to specific points in the composition:

• Red accent (Alternanthera 'Mini', Ludwigia super red): Position at the Golden Ratio — one cluster in the midground creates a vivid focal point against green surroundings
• Broad leaf accent (large anubias, red tiger lotus): Statement plant that stops the eye at its position
• Vertical accent (tall single stem of Rotala wallichii): Creates height contrast against broad-leaved midground

Planting Depth Trick: Mounding the Substrate

Slope the substrate from high at the back (8–10 cm) to low at the front (3–5 cm). This:

• Creates natural depth perspective
• Gives background plants a head start in height
• Keeps foreground plant crowns at the correct depth for healthy growth

Key Rule: Create Visual Layers

The strongest planted aquascapes have at least three distinct visual layers:

1. Foreground layer: Low; open; clear
2. Midground layer: Medium height; focal elements; complex texture
3. Background layer: Tall; fills upper tank; provides frame

A tank with only one layer — all plants the same height — will always look flat, regardless of species quality.
