Aquascaping Tools Guide: Tweezers, Scissors, Scrapers, and What Each Tool Is For

Aquascaping tools are not optional accessories — they are the difference between being able to maintain a planted tank precisely and struggling with imprecise substitutes. The right tool makes planting, trimming, and cleaning faster, cleaner, and less disturbing to fish and substrate. Here is what every type of aquascaping tool does and when to use each one.

Planting Tweezers

Planting tweezers are the most fundamental aquascaping tool. They allow you to plant, position, and remove plants with precision in water — tasks that are impossible with fingers alone.

Straight Tweezers (25–30 cm)

Use for:

• Planting individual stem plants vertically into substrate
• Placing carpet plant plugs precisely
• Repositioning small stones and accent pieces
• Retrieving dead leaves from deep within the layout

What to look for: Spring-loaded tension for easy one-handed use; fine, smooth tips that do not snag plant tissue; length of at least 27 cm for standard tanks

Curved Tweezers

Use for:

• Planting stems along the side walls of the tank where straight tweezers cannot reach at the correct angle
• Working in the foreground at an angled approach
• Planting in corners

What to look for: The same quality as straight tweezers; the curve angle should be about 45–60°

Wave / S-Curve Tweezers

Use for:

• Reaching into background areas over foreground planting without disturbing the layout
• Useful in mature tanks where replanting is needed in an established layout

Aquascaping Scissors

Aquascaping scissors are precision cutting tools for underwater use. Standard household scissors are too short, too blunt, and too imprecise for aquarium work.

Straight Scissors (25 cm)

Use for:

• Cutting stem plants at height — the most common trimming task
• Removing individual leaves from anubias and java fern
• Cutting moss on hardscape
• General-purpose trimming in accessible areas

Spring / Wave Scissors

Use for:

• Horizontal carpet trimming — the wave blade cuts a flat, even swath across carpet plants
• One-pass horizontal cuts through HC Cuba, Monte Carlo, or dwarf hairgrass
• Significantly faster than straight scissors for carpet maintenance

Curved Scissors

Use for:

• Trimming plants attached to vertical surfaces (moss on side walls, anubias on driftwood)
• Reaching into curved or overhung areas
• Removing growth at the base of stem plants near the substrate

Substrate Tools

Substrate Spatula

Use for:

• Levelling and sloping substrate before and after planting
• Creating substrate hills and valleys during aquascape construction
• Filling in substrate gaps that open up as the tank settles

Substrate Fork / Rake

Use for:

• Loosening compacted substrate around plant roots during cleaning
• Aerating substrate in low-flow areas to prevent anaerobic pockets
• Removing detritus trapped in carpet plant tangles

Glass Cleaning Tools

Magnetic Glass Cleaner

Use for:

• Cleaning algae from interior glass panels without putting hands in the tank
• Daily or weekly maintenance cleaning

Types:

• Standard floating magnetic cleaner: works on standard glass up to 10–12 mm
• Blade insert magnetic cleaner: adds a razor blade for harder deposits
• Large format: for tanks with thick glass (8 mm+)

Long-Handled Scraper / Razor Holder

Use for:

• Removing stubborn algae (green spot algae, calcium deposits) that a magnetic cleaner cannot shift
• Cleaning glass in corners where magnets cannot reach
• Scraping scale from rimless glass rims

Turkey Baster / Pipette

Often overlooked but invaluable:

Use for:

• Blowing detritus out of carpet plant tangles before water changes
• Spot-feeding individual corydoras or shrimp
• Removing floating plant debris from the water surface
• Precise dosing of liquid fertiliser in small tanks
