How to Clean Aquarium Tweezers, Scissors, and Aquascaping Tools

Quality aquascaping tools — stainless steel scissors, straight and curved tweezers, spatulas, and rakes — are a worthwhile investment. With proper care they last years. Without it, even good stainless steel will develop rust spots, dulled edges, and stiff joints. Here's how to look after them.

Why Aquascaping Tools Need Regular Cleaning

• Plant sap and organic residue: Sticky plant sap builds up on cutting edges and hinge mechanisms
• Algae: Algae grows on tools left damp in a humid environment
• Mineral deposits: Calcium and mineral scale from hard water leaves white crust on tool surfaces
• Rust risk: Even high-grade stainless steel is not rust-proof — it is rust-resistant. Long-term moisture exposure without drying causes surface rust.

After Every Use

1. Rinse under running tap water immediately after removing from the tank
2. Wipe dry with a clean towel — do not leave wet
3. Open scissors and tweezers fully before storing to allow any trapped moisture to evaporate

Weekly Deep Cleaning

Removing Plant Sap and Organic Residue

1. Soak tools in warm water for 5 minutes to soften residue
2. Scrub with a soft toothbrush along cutting edges and hinge mechanisms
3. For stubborn organic buildup, apply a small amount of isopropyl alcohol (70%) on a cotton swab
4. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely

Removing Mineral Deposits

For white calcium scale:

Handling Rust Spots

If surface rust appears on stainless steel tools:

4. Apply a very thin coat of food-grade mineral oil to prevent recurrence

Important: Never use coarse steel wool — it scratches the surface and makes future rust more likely.

Storage

• Store tools in a dry container — not left loose on a wet tank lid
• A tool roll (fabric or leather) keeps tools organised, separated, and moisture-free
• Avoid storing in a sealed plastic bag — trapped moisture accelerates corrosion
• Keep away from damp areas (direct proximity to the tank in humid Singapore conditions)

Lubricating Scissors and Spring Tweezers

If scissors become stiff at the hinge:

1. Open and close the joint repeatedly after soaking in warm water
2. Apply a single micro-drop of food-safe mineral oil at the pivot point
3. Work the joint open and closed to distribute the oil
4. Wipe away any excess
