Best Colourful Freshwater Fish for a Bright Home Aquarium

A colourful aquarium transforms any living space. Freshwater fish offer a remarkable range of colour — from the electric neon blue of cardinal tetras to the shimmering scales of electric blue acaras. You don't need a saltwater tank to achieve a stunning display. Here are the most colourful freshwater fish available in Singapore.

1. Cardinal Tetra

Deep crimson and electric blue from nose to tail, the cardinal tetra is one of the most visually stunning schooling fish in the hobby. They look spectacular in groups of 10 or more against dark substrate and a planted background.

Tank: 60+ litres | Temp: 23–28°C | pH: 5.5–7.0

2. Fancy Guppies

Modern fancy guppies — Moscow Blue, Dumbo Ear, Tuxedo, and Cobra varieties — are living art pieces. Males display vivid reds, blues, greens, and purples with elaborate flowing tails. They are easy to keep and breed readily.

Tank: 30+ litres | Temp: 22–28°C | pH: 6.5–7.5

3. German Blue Ram

The German blue ram is a compact cichlid covered in iridescent blue spots with splashes of red, yellow, and black. It is one of the most requested centrepiece fish in planted tanks and does best as a mated pair.

Tank: 60+ litres | Temp: 26–30°C | pH: 5.5–7.0

4. Electric Blue Acara

For a larger splash of colour, the electric blue acara is a peaceful cichlid covered in shimmering blue-green scales with subtle orange highlights. It pairs beautifully with schooling tetras in a 100+ litre planted tank.

Tank: 100+ litres | Temp: 24–28°C | pH: 6.5–7.5

5. Peacock Gudgeon

Native to Papua New Guinea, the peacock gudgeon is a small jewel-like fish with blue, red, and yellow markings. It thrives in smaller planted tanks and is peaceful enough for community setups.

Tank: 40+ litres | Temp: 22–26°C | pH: 6.5–7.5

6. Ember Tetra

Ember tetras are tiny orange fish that drift slowly through planted tanks in loose groups. They create a warm, glowing visual effect in densely planted aquariums, particularly striking against green moss and carpeting plants.

Tank: 30+ litres | Temp: 23–29°C | pH: 5.5–7.0

7. Betta (Solo Display)

A single male betta in a well-planted 30+ litre tank is one of the most colourful freshwater displays possible. Available in red, blue, purple, teal, copper, marble, and multicolour forms, no two bettas look the same.

Tank: 30+ litres (solo) | Temp: 24–30°C | pH: 6.5–7.5

Tips for Bringing Out Your Fish's Best Colours

  • Use dark substrate: Black substrate makes reds, blues, and oranges pop dramatically
  • Plant densely: Green backgrounds intensify warm and cool colour tones
  • Feed colour-enhancing foods: Quality pellets with astaxanthin and spirulina improve vibrancy
  • Reduce stress: Stable water parameters and adequate hiding spots keep fish relaxed and fully coloured
  • Use neutral or dark backgrounds: Avoid bright blue backing — it washes out naturally vivid fish
