How to Choose Aquarium Plants Based on Foreground, Midground, and Background Placement
A well-planted aquarium has depth — layers of plants at different heights that draw the eye forward and back, creating the illusion of space even in a 60-litre tank. Achieving this requires understanding which plant species belong in the foreground, midground, and background zones.
The Three Zones
Foreground (Front, Substrate Level)
Foreground plants should stay low — under 5–8 cm tall — so they don't block the view of midground and background plants. They are usually the most demanding plants in the tank, requiring the most light (since they are furthest from the light source) and often CO2.

Midground (Middle Section)
Midground plants provide texture and fill between the low foreground and tall background. They typically reach 10–25 cm and often serve as the visual focal point of the aquascape.

Background plants should be the tallest in the tank — typically 25–60+ cm — filling the rear wall and creating depth. Most are fast-growing stem plants that require regular trimming.

Planting Tips
- Start from the background: Plant background species first, then midground, then foreground. This prevents trampling delicate foreground plants.
- Leave space for growth: Background stem plants grow fast and will fill gaps. Leave 3–5 cm between stems initially.
- Trim background regularly: Left untrimmed, fast-growing background plants shade midground and foreground species, causing yellowing and die-back.
- Use root tabs for heavy feeders: Amazon swords and vallisneria are heavy root feeders. Push root tabs into the substrate near their roots monthly.
