Best Red Aquarium Plants for a Colourful Planted Tank

Green is the default colour of most planted tanks, but red aquarium plants punch through that palette with extraordinary visual impact. Reds, purples, and burgundies create depth, contrast, and a sense of warmth that makes planted tanks feel truly alive.

Here are the best red aquarium plants for Singapore hobbyists, ranked from easiest to most demanding.

Why Do Red Plants Need More Care?

Red colouration in aquatic plants comes from anthocyanin pigments, which the plant produces when:

  • Light intensity is high: Low-light conditions reduce red pigmentation
  • Nutrients are balanced: Adequate iron and micronutrients maintain red colouration
  • CO2 is available: CO2 injection accelerates growth and deepens colour

Without sufficient light and nutrition, red plants often revert to green.

Best Red Aquarium Plants

1. Rotala rotundifolia

Rotala rotundifolia is one of the easiest red stem plants available. Under moderate to high light with CO2, its tips turn a vivid pink-orange-red. It grows quickly, propagates by cuttings, and creates a soft, fine-textured background or midground.

Difficulty: Easy | Light: Medium–high | CO2: Recommended | Height: 20–40 cm

2. Ludwigia super red (Ludwigia sp. "Mini Super Red")

Ludwigia super red produces the most intense red of any commonly available aquarium plant. Under high light and CO2, its leaves become a deep, almost blood-red colour. It grows fast and needs regular trimming to prevent shading lower growth.

Difficulty: Moderate | Light: High | CO2: Required | Height: 20–40 cm

3. Alternanthera reineckii 'Mini'

Alternanthera reineckii is a classic aquascape red plant with deep magenta-red leaves. The 'Mini' variety stays compact and suits midground placement. It grows slowly, which is an advantage in aquascapes where precise pruning matters.

Difficulty: Moderate | Light: Medium–high | CO2: Recommended | Height: 10–20 cm

4. Red Tiger Lotus (Nymphaea zenkeri)

The red tiger lotus grows from a bulb and produces large, floating lily-pad leaves with a dark red mottled pattern. It is a dramatic statement plant for larger tanks. Trim floating leaves regularly to keep it from shading the entire tank.

Difficulty: Easy | Light: Medium | CO2: Optional | Spread: 30–50 cm

5. Ammannia gracilis

Ammannia gracilis is a delicate stem plant with narrow, olive-green leaves that develop orange-red edges under strong light. It is slightly more demanding than rotala but rewards effort with a subtler, more complex colouration.

Difficulty: Moderate | Light: High | CO2: Required | Height: 20–45 cm

6. Rotala wallichii

Rotala wallichii has fine, hair-like leaves that turn vivid pink to red under high light. Its feathery texture is unlike any other stem plant and looks particularly striking in large background masses.

Difficulty: Moderate | Light: High | CO2: Required | Height: 20–40 cm

Tips for Keeping Red Plants Vivid

  • Use high-output LED lighting: At least 40–50 PAR at plant level for most red species
  • Inject CO2: Even a simple DIY CO2 setup makes a significant difference
  • Dose iron weekly: Iron deficiency causes the fastest colour loss in red plants
  • Keep nitrates in range: Very low nitrates (under 5 ppm) can paradoxically cause colour loss
  • Trim regularly: New growth at the top is always the most vividly coloured
