How to Maintain a Rimless Aquarium for a Clean Display Look

A rimless aquarium is one of the most visually striking setups you can own — but its beauty depends entirely on cleanliness. With no frame to hide the glass edge, every calcium deposit, algae smear, and waterline stain is fully visible. Here's how to maintain a rimless tank to keep it display-ready.

The Challenges Unique to Rimless Tanks

1. Waterline mineral deposits: Open-top tanks lose water to evaporation constantly. As water evaporates from the glass rim, dissolved minerals are left behind as white calcium lines.
2. Visible glass edges: Chips, scratches, or discolouration on the open glass rim are immediately noticeable.
3. Evaporation: Singapore's warm temperature means rimless tanks can lose 1–3 cm of water weekly — requiring regular top-ups.
4. Splash marks: Evaporated water leaves mineral splash marks on the sides of the glass above the waterline.

Weekly Maintenance Checklist

1. Top Up Evaporated Water

Use RO water or dechlorinated soft water for top-ups — never undiluted tap water repeatedly. Repeated top-ups with mineral-rich tap water gradually raise TDS and hardness over time, as minerals stay in the tank while pure water evaporates.

2. Wipe the Waterline

The glass at and just above the waterline accumulates minerals within days:

1. Dip a clean magnetic algae cleaner or glass scraper to the waterline
2. For existing calcium deposits above the waterline: wet a cloth with white vinegar and hold it against the glass for 2–3 minutes before wiping
3. Rinse the glass surface with clean water immediately after vinegar treatment

3. Clean the Glass Interior

Use a quality magnetic glass cleaner or razor blade scraper for algae on the interior. For a rimless tank the standard is zero visible algae at all times — even light algae on the rear and side panels is visible without a frame to draw the eye away.

4. Polish the Glass Rim

Wipe the top glass rim with a dry microfibre cloth after every water change. This removes water droplets before they evaporate and leave mineral marks.

Exterior Glass Polish

Use a glass cleaner (not ammonia-based) or a 50:50 vinegar-water solution on the exterior glass. Buff dry with a clean microfibre cloth. Any fingerprints, smears, or mineral splash marks from maintenance activities should be addressed.

Filter and Equipment Check

In an open-top tank, more evaporation also means:

• Filter inlets may sit higher in the water column over time — check they are fully submerged
• Heater position may need adjustment
• CO2 diffuser depth may shift

Managing Evaporation Automatically

For consistency, an automatic top-off (ATO) system connects a small pump to a reservoir of RO water. When the water level drops below a float switch, the pump automatically adds water. This maintains a constant water level and is the most effective solution for open-top evaporation management.
