Description
Brochis pantanalensis, often known as the Pantanal Brochis or Pantanal Catfish, is a species of catfish native to the Pantanal region in South America. Here’s some detailed information about them, particularly when kept in pairs:
Appearance
- Coloration: Brochis pantanalensis typically has a light brown to olive-green body with darker spots or patterns. They may also exhibit a slightly iridescent sheen.
- Size: They generally grow to about 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm) in length. In a well-maintained environment, they can reach their full size over time.
Behavior and Temperament
- Temperament: These catfish are generally peaceful and social, making them good candidates for community tanks. They are active and can be quite engaging to watch.
- Gregarious: They prefer to be kept in groups rather than alone. While they do well in pairs, a small group of at least 4-6 individuals is ideal for encouraging natural behavior and reducing stress.
- Pair Behavior: When kept in pairs, they may exhibit more bonding behavior and are often seen interacting closely. However, they still appreciate having additional companions to feel secure and to display natural social behaviors.
Tank Requirements
- Tank Size: A minimum of a 20-gallon (75 liters) tank is recommended for a pair of Brochis pantanalensis. If you plan to keep a small group, a larger tank will provide more space and stability in water conditions.
- Substrate: A soft substrate like fine sand or smooth gravel is ideal to protect their barbels and prevent injury.
- Water Conditions:
- Temperature: 72-78°F (22-26°C).
- pH: Slightly acidic to neutral, around 6.0-7.5.
- Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (2-12 dGH) is preferred.
- Aquascaping: Provide hiding spots and plenty of cover with plants, driftwood, and rocks. They appreciate a well-decorated tank with plenty of places to explore and hide.
Diet
- Omnivorous: Brochis pantanalensis are omnivores and will accept a variety of foods. Offer high-quality sinking pellets, wafers, and live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.
- Feeding: They forage along the tank bottom, so ensure that sinking foods are available. A varied diet will help them stay healthy and colorful.
Compatibility
- Tank Mates: They are compatible with a wide range of peaceful community fish. Suitable tank mates include small tetras, rasboras, and other non-aggressive bottom dwellers.
- Fish to Avoid: Avoid keeping them with aggressive or large fish that might view them as prey or compete for bottom space.
Keeping Brochis pantanalensis in pairs or small groups can create a lively and interactive aquarium environment. Their engaging behavior and relatively easy care make them a good choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists.
