Description
The Odessa Barb (Pethia padamya), also known as the Scarlet Barb, is a vibrant and popular freshwater aquarium fish. Here's some information about the Odessa Barb:
Size: Adult Odessa Barbs typically reach a size of about 2 to 2.5 inches (5 to 6.4 cm).
Coloration: These barbs are known for their striking colors. The males, especially, display vivid shades of orange, red, and iridescent blue. Females tend to be less colorful.
Tank Size: They do well in a moderately sized aquarium. A tank of at least 20 gallons is suitable for a small school of Odessa Barbs.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 72-77°F (22-25°C)
- pH: 6.0-7.0
- Hardness: 5-15 dGH
Diet: Odessa Barbs are omnivores. They accept a variety of foods, including high-quality flakes, pellets, live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms.
Tank Setup: Provide a well-planted aquarium with open swimming areas. Odessa Barbs appreciate the presence of plants and decorations. A dark substrate can enhance their colors.
Compatibility: Odessa Barbs are generally peaceful but can become slightly territorial, especially during breeding. They are suitable for community tanks with other non-aggressive species of similar size.
Breeding: Breeding Odessa Barbs in captivity is possible. Separate breeding tanks with fine-leaved plants for egg-laying and protection are recommended. The parents may eat their eggs, so providing a separate space for eggs to fall into and hatch is advisable.
Behavior: They are active and social fish that benefit from being kept in groups of at least six individuals. Larger groups tend to bring out the best colors and behavior in these fish.
Tankmates: Compatible with other peaceful community fish of similar size. Avoid aggressive or overly boisterous tankmates.
