Description

Pygmy Corydoras (Corydoras pygmaeus)

Description

The Pygmy Corydoras is a small, peaceful freshwater catfish known for its diminutive size and active schooling behavior. Native to the Rio Madeira basin in Brazil, these tiny catfish are a favorite among aquarists for their charming appearance and lively antics.

Appearance

  • Body Coloration: Silver body with a distinct black horizontal stripe running from the nose to the tail, complemented by a fine, dark line along the dorsal side.
  • Fins: Mostly transparent with minimal markings.
  • Size: Typically grows to about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in length.

Habitat

  • Natural Habitat: Found in slow-moving, clear waters with sandy or muddy substrates and abundant vegetation.
  • Aquarium Setup: A well-planted tank with plenty of open swimming space and soft, sandy substrate to protect their barbels. Floating plants can provide shaded areas, mimicking their natural habitat.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 72-79°F (22-26°C)
  • pH: 6.0-7.2
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (2-15 dGH)

Diet

Pygmy Corydoras are omnivorous and thrive on a varied diet. They can be fed high-quality micro sinking pellets and wafers. Supplement their diet with live or frozen foods like daphnia, brine shrimp, and microworms, as well as finely crushed flakes.

Behavior and Compatibility

  • Temperament: Peaceful and social, best kept in groups of at least 6 to 10 individuals to encourage natural schooling behavior.
  • Tank Mates: Compatible with other small, peaceful community fish. Avoid keeping them with larger or aggressive species that may intimidate or prey on them.

Breeding

Breeding Pygmy Corydoras can be relatively straightforward. They typically spawn in groups, with females laying adhesive eggs on plant leaves, aquarium glass, or decorations. A separate breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic water can increase the chances of successful breeding. After spawning, parents should be removed to prevent them from eating the eggs.

Maintenance

Pygmy Corydoras are hardy fish but require good water quality to thrive. Regular water changes and maintaining a clean substrate are essential. They are sensitive to high nitrate levels, so proper filtration and water care are crucial.

Interesting Fact

Unlike many other Corydoras species, Pygmy Corydoras often spend a significant amount of time swimming in the mid-water levels of the aquarium, rather than exclusively at the bottom. This unique behavior, along with their small size and endearing schooling habits, makes them a delightful addition to nano and community tanks.
