• Water Conditions: The Arowana requires pristine water with a pH consistently maintained between 6.5 and 7.5, though it adapts best to slightly alkaline conditions (high pH of 7.0-8.0). Water temperature must be kept at a stable 75-82°F (24-28°C). Exceptional filtration is non-negotiable, as these fish produce significant waste. Weekly water changes of 20-30% are essential to remove nitrates and maintain low ammonia and nitrite levels. Use a powerful canister filter or sump system to ensure strong water flow and oxygenation. Avoid sudden fluctuations in pH or temperature, as this can stress the fish and compromise its immune system.
• Suitable Tank Mates: Due to its aggressive and territorial nature, the Arowana is best kept alone or with large, robust, and similarly aggressive species. Suitable tank mates include large cichlids (such as Oscars, Jack Dempseys, or Green Terrors), large catfish (like Plecostomus or Redtail Catfish), and other large, fast-swimming fish that can defend themselves. Avoid small, peaceful, or slow-moving fish, as they will be viewed as prey. Even with compatible tank mates, monitor interactions closely, as Arowanas may bully or injure others during feeding or territorial disputes. A spacious tank (minimum 250 gallons for adults) is critical to reduce aggression.
• Feeding Habits: Arowanas are carnivorous predators with a voracious appetite. Feed a varied diet of high-quality pellets specifically formulated for large carnivorous fish, supplemented with live or frozen foods like feeder fish (ensure they are disease-free), shrimp, crickets, mealworms, and occasionally small frogs or earthworms. Juveniles (1-2cm) require smaller, more frequent feedings—offer tiny live foods like brine shrimp or micro-worms 3-4 times daily. As they grow, reduce feedings to once or twice daily.
