Description
Corydoras pantanalensis, also known as the Pantanal Cory or Pantanal Catfish, is a small and charming species of freshwater catfish belonging to the Corydoradinae subfamily. These catfish are native to the Pantanal wetlands in Brazil, specifically the Paraguay River basin. They are highly appreciated in the aquarium hobby for their peaceful temperament, unique appearance, and valuable role in maintaining the tank's cleanliness.
Appearance:
- Size: Corydoras pantanalensis is a small species of catfish, typically reaching a length of around 1.5 to 2 inches (4 to 5 centimeters).
- Coloration: They have a distinctive appearance with a light beige to sandy-colored body and a series of dark spots and patches scattered over their body, resembling a camouflage pattern.
Water Conditions:
- Temperature: Maintain a tropical water temperature between 72°F and 78°F (22°C to 26°C) to ensure the well-being of Pantanal Corydoras.
- pH Level: Aim for a slightly acidic to neutral pH level between 6.5 and 7.5 to replicate their natural habitat.
- Water Hardness: Provide moderately soft to moderately hard water with a hardness level between 2 and 12 dGH.
Tank Setup:
- Tank Size: Pantanal Corydoras can be kept in a small aquarium, but it is recommended to provide them with a tank of at least 20 gallons (75 liters) to allow for ample swimming space and to keep a small group.
- Substrate: Use a soft and fine-grained substrate to mimic their natural environment and protect their delicate barbels.
- Aquascape: Include driftwood, rocks, and live plants to create hiding spots and replicate their natural habitat.
Feeding Habit:
- Omnivorous Diet: Corydoras pantanalensis are omnivores and accept a wide variety of foods.
- Sinking Pellets and Live Foods: Offer high-quality sinking pellets suitable for small catfish as their primary diet. They also enjoy live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.
Behavior:
- Peaceful Nature: Pantanal Corydoras are peaceful and social fish, making them suitable for community aquariums.
- Shoaling Behavior: Keep them in a group of at least six individuals to encourage their natural shoaling behavior and reduce stress.
Care:
- Water Quality: Maintain excellent water quality through regular water changes and efficient filtration to ensure their well-being.
- Tank Mates: They can be kept with other peaceful community fish species that won't outcompete them for food.
