Product Description

Add a majestic predator to your marine tank with the Lion Fish, known for its striking venomous spines and graceful swimming.

  • Water Conditions: Lion Fish thrive in stable marine aquariums with a temperature range of 24–28°C (75–82°F), pH between 8.1 and 8.4, and specific gravity of 1.020–1.025. They require excellent water quality with low nitrates and ammonia, achieved through a robust filtration system and regular water changes of 10–20% weekly. Strong water movement is not essential, but moderate flow helps keep the tank clean. A salinity level of 1.022–1.025 is ideal, and a protein skimmer is recommended to maintain pristine conditions. Lion Fish are sensitive to sudden changes, so acclimate slowly over 45–60 minutes using drip acclimation.
  • Suitable Tank Mates: Lion Fish are predatory and will eat any fish or invertebrate small enough to fit in their mouth. Ideal tank mates include larger, robust species such as tangs, angelfish, groupers, triggers, and larger wrasses. Avoid small fish like gobies, damsels, or shrimp. They can coexist with other lionfish of similar size if the tank is spacious (minimum 120 gallons for one, add 30 gallons per additional lionfish). Keep them away from aggressive species that may nip their fins, such as some puffers or triggerfish. Invertebrates like crabs, snails, and shrimp are at risk, so only keep with large, mobile crustaceans or none at all.
  • Feeding Habits: Lion Fish are carnivorous and primarily eat live or frozen meaty foods in the wild. In captivity, they readily accept frozen krill, mysis shrimp, silversides, and chopped squid or fish flesh. Feed them 2–3 times per week, offering enough food to see a slight bulge in their stomach. Juveniles may require smaller, more frequent feedings (every other day) of live brine shrimp or guppies to initiate feeding. Use feeding tongs to target-feed and avoid overfeeding, as they are prone to obesity. Never feed them freshwater fish like goldfish, as these lack proper nutrients and can cause health issues. Some individuals may need weaning onto frozen foods; soak items in garlic extract to entice picky eaters.
  • Care Requirements: Lion Fish are hardy but require experienced handling due to their venomous spines. Provide plenty of hiding spots using live rock, caves, and overhangs to reduce stress. They are nocturnal and may be shy initially; dim lighting helps them feel secure. Tank size should be at least 100 gallons for a single adult, with longer tanks preferred for swimming space. Quarantine new specimens for 4–6 weeks to observe for parasites like ich. Their venom is a defensive mechanism; avoid direct contact and use a net or container for transfers. Regularly inspect for fin damage or signs of disease, and maintain a consistent feeding schedule. They are generally peaceful to larger tank mates but will defend territory. Note their long, flowing fins can be damaged by sharp rocks or aggressive tank mates, so ensure smooth decorations and no nipping species. Proper care ensures a lifespan of 10–15 years in captivity.
