Product Description

Discover the majestic Arowana, an aggressive high-PH predator perfect for advanced aquarists. This tiny 1-2cm juvenile grows into a stunning centerpiece fish.

  • Water Conditions: Arowanas thrive in high-PH water between 7.0 and 8.5, with a temperature range of 75-82°F (24-28°C). They require excellent filtration and strong water movement, as they are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite spikes. Weekly water changes of 20-30% are essential to maintain water quality. The tank should be well-oxygenated, and a tight-fitting lid is mandatory to prevent jumping. Use a pH test kit regularly to ensure stability, as sudden drops can stress the fish.
  • Suitable Tank Mates: Due to their aggressive temperament, Arowanas are best kept alone or with large, robust species that can defend themselves. Suitable tank mates include large cichlids (e.g., Oscars, Jack Dempseys), large catfish (e.g., Plecos, Ripsaw cats), and other Arowanas of similar size (if raised together). Avoid small fish, shrimp, or any tank mates that can fit in the Arowana’s mouth. Even at 1-2cm, these juveniles may nip at smaller fish. Always provide ample space—a minimum 250-gallon tank for adults—to reduce territorial aggression.
  • Feeding Habits: Arowanas are carnivorous predators. Feed juveniles a varied diet of live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and small insects. As they grow, transition to larger foods such as feeder fish, shrimp, crickets, and high-quality pellets formulated for carnivorous fish. Feed once or twice daily, offering only what they can consume in 2-3 minutes. Avoid overfeeding, as Arowanas are prone to obesity and fatty liver disease. Supplement with vitamins or gut-loaded prey to ensure balanced nutrition.
  • Care Requirements: Arowanas require a spacious tank (minimum 250 gallons for adults) with a secure lid to prevent jumping. The tank should be decorated with driftwood, rocks, and hardy plants (e.g., Java fern, Anubias) to provide hiding spots, but leave open swimming areas. Maintain a consistent water temperature and pH, and use a powerful canister filter or sump system. Regular water testing is crucial. Handle with care during tank maintenance, as Arowanas can be skittish and may injure themselves. Quarantine new fish for 2-4 weeks before introduction. Monitor for common diseases like ich, fin rot, and dropsy, and treat promptly. Note that these fish can live 10-15 years or more with proper care, so long-term commitment is required.
