Description

Paretroplus menarambo, commonly known as the Pinstripe Damba, is a rare and striking cichlid species endemic to the coastal river systems of northwestern Madagascar. It is highly valued among advanced hobbyists for its bold appearance, unique body shape, and charismatic behavior.

This species features a deep, laterally compressed body adorned with distinct vertical black bars contrasted against a silvery-gray to light brown base color. Adults develop a powerful, robust profile with pronounced facial features, giving them a commanding presence in the aquarium.

In the wild, P. menarambo inhabits slow-moving, murky waters with sandy or muddy substrates. In captivity, they thrive in spacious tanks with stable water parameters, gentle flow, and plenty of open swimming space. They are omnivorous, feeding on plant material, small invertebrates, and detritus.

Known for their semi-aggressive but social nature, these cichlids do best in groups and are often kept in species-focused setups due to their rarity and conservation significance. Once considered extinct in the wild, they survive thanks to dedicated breeding programs and responsible aquarists.

A true collector’s species, Paretroplus menarambo stands out as one of Madagascar’s most iconic and endangered cichlids—perfect for hobbyists seeking something both visually impressive and meaningful to preserve.
