Redhead Cichlid (Vieja Synspilum)

Vieja synspilum, also known as the Redhead Cichlid or Quetzal Cichlid, is a majestic species native to the rivers of Central America. Renowned for its brilliant mix of red, orange, turquoise, and gold, this cichlid displays some of the most vibrant colors found in freshwater fish — especially in mature males.

Known for its intelligence, bold personality, and interactive behavior, the Synspilum quickly becomes the centerpiece of any large aquarium. It thrives in spacious tanks with robust filtration, sandy substrates, and rocks or driftwood for natural structure. While territorial during breeding, it is generally compatible with other large, similarly tempered Central or South American cichlids.
