Description
Redhead Cichlid (Vieja synspilum) is a bold Central American cichlid famous for its red-orange head, massive size, and dominant, intelligent personality.
Detailed Product Description
Overview & Appearance
- The Redhead Cichlid (Vieja synspilum) is one of the most iconic large Central American cichlids, instantly recognizable by its intense red to orange head coloration contrasting against a grey, green, or bluish body.
- Mature males develop large nuchal humps, thick lips, and a deep, laterally compressed body that gives them an imposing, almost prehistoric presence.
- Color intensity varies with mood, dominance, diet, and water quality—high-quality vegetable-rich diets dramatically enhance red pigmentation.
- Females are slightly smaller, rounder-bodied, and usually display a more compact red mask, especially during breeding.
- Compared to Vieja argentea, synspilum is more visually dramatic, trading subtle metallic sheen for high-contrast coloration.
- Known for exceptional intelligence and awareness, this species often recognizes its keeper and interacts aggressively or inquisitively with movement outside the tank.
Tank Size & Aquascaping
- Minimum tank size:
- Single adult: 150 gallons (570 L)
- Pair or mixed large cichlid setup: 180–240 gallons+
- This is a powerfully built, territorial fish that requires both swimming room and defended zones.
- Aquascaping guidelines:
- Use large rocks, heavy driftwood, and root structures to break lines of sight.
- Substrate should be sand or smooth gravel, as digging is constant.
- Avoid fragile décor—Vieja synspilum will rearrange the tank to its liking.
- Plants are usually not viable; even tough plants will be uprooted or shredded.
- Strong lids and reinforced tank stands are recommended—this fish is strong, fast, and unpredictable.
Water Conditions
- Vieja synspilum thrives in warm, mineral-rich, stable water.
- Temperature:
- Ideal: 25–30°C (77–86°F)
- Slightly warmer water often intensifies red coloration
- pH:
- 7.0–8.2 (neutral to alkaline preferred)
- Hardness:
- 10–25 dGH
- Filtration:
- Requires industrial-level filtration (large canisters or sump systems).
- High oxygenation is critical.
- Water changes:
- 30–50% weekly, more if heavily stocked.
- Poor water quality leads quickly to color loss, aggression escalation, and hole-in-the-head disease.
Feeding Habits & Diet
- Omnivorous with strong herbivorous preference, especially in adulthood.
- In the wild, they graze on algae, aquatic plants, fruits, seeds, insects, and crustaceans.
- Recommended staple diet:
- Premium large cichlid pellets with spirulina or kelp
- Supplementary foods:
- Blanched vegetables: zucchini, spinach, lettuce, peas
- Occasional protein: krill, shrimp, mussels
- Fruit treats (sparingly): papaya, melon
- Avoid excessive animal protein (especially beef heart or mammal meat); it causes bloating and long-term organ damage.
- Feed once or twice daily, controlled portions—this species overeats aggressively.
Tank Mates Compatibility
- Not suitable for standard community tanks.
- Best setups:
- Single specimen display tank
- Bonded pair in very large aquariums
- Possible tank mates (expert-only):
- Other large Central American cichlids (Vieja melanura, Parachromis managuensis)
- Large armored catfish (Plecos, Pseudacanthicus)
- Avoid completely:
- Small fish
- Passive species
- African cichlids (different aggression style & water chemistry)
- During breeding, aggression becomes extreme and non-negotiable.
Breeding Behavior
- Substrate spawner with intense parental care.
- Pairs form strong bonds but can be lethal to tank mates.
- Fry are guarded aggressively for weeks.
- Breeding tanks should be species-only, ideally with removable partitions.
Care Level & Suitability
- Experience level: Advanced
- Requires:
- Large aquarium footprint
- Heavy filtration & frequent water changes
- Confident handling of aggressive fish
- Not suitable for beginners or mixed-community enthusiasts.
- In the right setup, this fish becomes a long-lived, dominant showpiece.
