Description
Altolamprologus calvus is a sleek and iconic cichlid species endemic to the rocky shorelines of Lake Tanganyika. Closely related to A. compressiceps, the Calvus is instantly recognizable by its tall, laterally compressed body and its striking pattern of fine, pearly spots.
This species typically displays a dark base color—ranging from black to brown or slate—overlaid with dense, shimmering white or bluish speckles that form a beautiful contrast. Its elongated face, slow stalking movements, and extremely thin profile make it one of the most unique ambush predators in the lake.
In the wild, A. calvus inhabits steep rocky reefs where it uses its compressed body to navigate tight crevices while hunting small fish and invertebrates. In aquariums, it thrives in spacious, rock-rich setups with stable Tanganyikan water conditions. Despite its predatory nature, the Calvus is generally peaceful but territorial, slow-growing, and compatible with similarly sized tankmates.
Known for its calm demeanor and refined beauty, Altolamprologus calvus is a favorite among experienced hobbyists seeking a cichlid with elegance, character, and distinctive evolutionary adaptations. This species makes a stunning centerpiece in any Lake Tanganyika community display.
