Product Description

Discover the Dinosaur, a prehistoric-looking fish that brings ancient charm to your aquarium with minimal care needs.

  • Water Conditions: Thrives in tropical freshwater with a temperature range of 72–82°F (22–28°C), pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water (dH 2–15). Regular water changes of 20–30% weekly are essential to maintain stable parameters and reduce nitrates. Ensure strong filtration with gentle water flow, as these fish prefer well-oxygenated water but avoid strong currents that may stress them.
  • Suitable Tank Mates: Ideal companions include robust, peaceful fish of similar size, such as larger tetras, rainbowfish, gouramis, and catfish like Corydoras or Plecos. Avoid small, nippy species (e.g., neon tetras, guppies) that may be seen as prey, and aggressive fish like cichlids that could bully the Dinosaur. Best kept in groups of 3–5 to encourage natural schooling behaviour, but ensure tank is spacious enough (minimum 75 gallons) to prevent territorial disputes.
  • Feeding Habits: Omnivorous with a preference for protein-rich foods. Offer a varied diet including high-quality sinking pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and live foods like daphnia or blackworms. Supplement with vegetable matter such as blanched spinach or zucchini once a week. Feed small portions 2–3 times daily, only what they can consume in 2–3 minutes to avoid overfeeding and water quality issues.
  • Care Requirements: Provide a spacious, well-decorated aquarium with plenty of hiding spots using driftwood, rocks, and dense planting (e.g., Java fern, Anubias). Soft, sandy substrate is recommended to protect their delicate barbels. Maintain stable water parameters and perform regular maintenance to prevent disease. Quarantine new arrivals for at least 2 weeks before introducing to main tank. Monitor for signs of stress like clamped fins or erratic swimming, and avoid sudden changes in temperature or pH. Breeding is challenging in home aquaria but may occur with optimal conditions and a separate breeding tank.
  • Additional Notes: Known for their unique, elongated bodies and prehistoric appearance, these fish are calm and curious, often exploring the tank during the day. They are sensitive to poor water quality, so invest in a reliable test kit and perform water tests weekly. Avoid overcrowding and ensure tank lid is secure, as they may jump when startled. With proper care, they can live 10–15 years, making them a long-term, rewarding addition to a community aquarium.
