Description
The Synodontis petricola, commonly known as the Petricola Catfish, is a small and attractive species of catfish belonging to the family Mochokidae. Native to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa, this catfish species is popular in the aquarium hobby. Here's some information about their care and lifestyle:
Appearance:
- Synodontis petricola has a sleek and elongated body with a unique pattern of spots and stripes.
- They have a dark background color, often brown or black, with light spots and sometimes a white stripe running along the lateral line.
Size:
- Petricola Catfish are relatively small, typically reaching lengths of about 4 to 5 inches (10 to 13 cm) in the aquarium.
Habitat and Tank Setup:
- In their natural habitat of Lake Tanganyika, Petricola Catfish inhabit rocky areas with hiding spots. Replicate this environment in the aquarium by providing caves and crevices.
- Maintain a pH of 7.8 to 8.5 and a water temperature between 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C).
- Use a substrate that mimics the rocky lake bottom, and ensure good water quality with regular water changes.
Diet:
- Synodontis petricola is omnivorous, and their diet should include a mix of high-quality sinking pellets, flakes, and frozen or live foods.
- They are scavengers, and they will also consume leftover food in the aquarium.
Behavior:
- Petricola Catfish are generally peaceful and can be kept in community aquariums.
- They are nocturnal, so they may be more active during the evening and night.
Tank Mates:
- Choose tank mates carefully. Petricola Catfish can coexist with other peaceful fish that share similar water requirements.
- Avoid keeping them with overly aggressive or fin-nipping species.
Breeding:
- Breeding Synodontis petricola can be challenging and may require specific conditions.
- Provide hiding spots and caves for potential breeding sites.
- Successful breeding may involve providing the right water parameters and a comfortable environment.
Maintenance:
- Regularly monitor and maintain water parameters, as Petricola Catfish are sensitive to poor water quality.
- Perform regular water changes to keep the aquarium environment clean and healthy.
