Description
The CC-3061 Yellow Lemon Lab Cichlid is a popular and attractive freshwater fish species that belongs to the cichlid family. It is more commonly known as the Labidochromis caeruleus or Yellow Lab Cichlid. The Yellow Lab Cichlid is native to Lake Malawi in East Africa and is highly sought after by aquarium hobbyists for its bright yellow coloration and peaceful nature.
Appearance:
- Size: The Yellow Lab Cichlid typically grows to a size of about 4 to 5 inches (10 to 13 centimeters) in length.
- Coloration: As the name suggests, these cichlids have a bright yellow or lemon coloration, which intensifies as they mature. Males usually exhibit more intense coloration than females and may develop black stripes on their dorsal fins.
Water Conditions:
- Temperature: Maintain a stable tropical water temperature between 75°F and 82°F (24°C to 28°C) for the well-being of the Yellow Lab Cichlid.
- pH Level: Aim for a slightly alkaline to neutral pH level between 7.6 and 8.6 to replicate their natural habitat in Lake Malawi.
- Water Hardness: Provide moderately hard to hard water with a hardness level between 10 and 20 dGH.
Tank Setup:
- Tank Size: Yellow Lab Cichlids are best suited for a tank of at least 30 gallons (113 liters) or more, providing enough space for them to swim and explore.
- Aquascape: Create an environment that mimics their natural habitat with rocky caves and hiding spots. Incorporate sandy substrate to replicate the lake's sandy bottom.
- Decorations: Adding driftwood or rock formations will help create territories and provide areas for the cichlids to establish their territories.
Feeding Habit:
- Omnivorous Diet: Yellow Lab Cichlids are omnivores and have a varied diet in the wild.
- High-Quality Pellets and Flakes: Offer high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes as their primary diet.
- Supplementary Foods: Supplement their diet with occasional live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, or small insects.
Behavior:
- Peaceful Cichlids: Yellow Lab Cichlids are relatively peaceful compared to other cichlid species. However, males can be territorial, especially during breeding.
- Group Socialization: They are social fish and thrive in groups. Keeping them in groups of at least six individuals helps reduce aggression and stress.
Care:
- Water Quality: Maintain excellent water quality through regular water changes and efficient filtration to ensure the health of the Yellow Lab Cichlids.
- Tank Mates: When selecting tank mates, consider other peaceful African cichlids or community fish that can tolerate their slightly aggressive behavior.
