Aphyocharax rathbuni, also known as the Bloodfin Tetra, is a popular and attractive species of tetra that can make a wonderful addition to your aquarium. Here is some information about the Bloodfin Tetra:
Size: Bloodfin Tetras typically grow to a size of about 5-6 centimeters (2-2.5 inches), making them a small-sized fish suitable for most community aquariums.
Appearance: These tetras have a sleek and streamlined body with a silver coloration. However, their distinguishing feature is their bright red or orange fins, especially the lower part of the tail fin, which gives them their name "Bloodfin Tetra."
Behavior: Bloodfin Tetras are generally peaceful and social fish, which makes them suitable for community aquariums. They are known to form shoals and feel more secure when kept in groups of five or more. They are active swimmers and enjoy exploring the middle and top levels of the aquarium.
Water Parameters: Bloodfin Tetras prefer a well-maintained aquarium with stable water conditions. The recommended water temperature ranges from 22 to 26 degrees Celsius (72-79 degrees Fahrenheit). The pH level should be slightly acidic to neutral, around 6.5 to 7.5, and the water hardness should be moderate.
Tank Setup: Provide plenty of plants, driftwood, and hiding places in the aquarium to create a natural environment for the Bloodfin Tetras. They appreciate a dimly lit tank with areas of open swimming space. It is also important to ensure good water filtration and regular water changes to maintain optimal water quality.
Feeding: Bloodfin Tetras are omnivorous and will readily accept a variety of foods. Offer them a balanced diet that includes high-quality flake or pellet food as their staple diet. Supplement their diet with small live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia to provide them with additional nutrients and variety.
Compatibility: Bloodfin Tetras are generally peaceful and can be kept with other small, non-aggressive fish species that share similar water requirements. Good tankmates include other peaceful tetras, rasboras, small livebearers, and peaceful bottom-dwelling fish like Corydoras catfish.
Remember to acclimate the Bloodfin Tetras properly to their new environment and monitor their behavior and health regularly. With proper care and suitable tank conditions, these colorful and active tetras can bring beauty and liveliness to your aquarium.
