Borneo Blackwater River

Borneo's peat swamp rivers wind slowly through ancient rainforest, stained deep amber by dissolved tannins and humic acids leaching from the accumulated vegetation. The water is extremely soft, acidic, and visually dramatic — simultaneously alien and deeply beautiful. The fish that live here are adapted to those specific conditions, and they reward keepers who faithfully replicate them.

Bettas from the blackwater rivers of Borneo are subtler in colour than the highly developed show strains, but far more interesting in natural behaviour. Rasboras are quintessential blackwater fish — small, elegant, and at their most vivid in tannin-stained water. Kuhli Loaches bring the bottom level to life with their eel-like movements and nocturnal activity. Chocolate Gouramis are the crown jewel of Southeast Asian blackwater fish — demanding but breathtaking when kept correctly. Driftwood, dried leaves, and peat filtration are essential for recreating this biotope faithfully.
