Indian Hill Stream

The cold, fast-flowing hill streams of the Western Ghats and Himalayan foothills are among the most oxygen-rich freshwater environments on Earth. Water tumbles over smooth boulders in permanent motion, keeping temperatures cool and dissolved oxygen levels high. The fish that have evolved here are built for that current — powerful, streamlined, and brilliantly coloured, especially during the breeding season.

Hillstream Loaches are the most specialised inhabitants — their flattened bodies and modified fins allow them to cling to smooth rock surfaces in full current, and they are endlessly fascinating to observe. Rosy Barbs add bold colour and active energy to the midwater. Danios are famously hardy and at their best in well-oxygenated, slightly cooler water. Nerite snails round out the community by keeping rock surfaces clean of algae. Strong filtration, good flow, and cooler water temperatures (18–24°C) are the key to success with this bundle.
