Lake Tanganyika Shell Bed

At the southern end of Lake Tanganyika — the world's second deepest lake and one of its oldest — lies a unique habitat found nowhere else on Earth: vast beds of empty snail shells on the sandy lake floor, each one a potential home, spawning site, or territory for the smallest and most fascinating cichlids in Africa. This bundle recreates that shell-bed ecosystem in miniature, and the behaviour it unlocks is endlessly entertaining.

Neolamprologus shell-dwelling cichlids are intelligent, curious, and highly territorial despite their tiny size — they will defend their chosen shell against fish many times larger. Julidochromis are slender, boldly patterned cichlids that swim in pairs and form long-term bonds. Tropheus are more challenging — herbivorous, robust, and intensely social — but deeply rewarding for experienced keepers who can meet their dietary needs. A sandy substrate, plenty of shells, and the hard alkaline water all Tanganyika cichlids require will unlock the full drama of this setup.
