Southeast Asian Peat Swamp

Deep in the lowland forests of Borneo and the Malay Peninsula, vast peat swamps create one of the world's most extreme freshwater environments — water so dark with tannins it appears black, with near-zero hardness and an acidic pH that drops well below what most fish tolerate. The species that have adapted to these conditions are unique, specialised, and hauntingly beautiful.

Chocolate Gouramis are arguably the most atmospheric fish in the freshwater hobby — slow-moving, cryptically patterned, and demanding in terms of water quality. Chili Rasboras are right at home in blackwater conditions, their red bodies intensifying in tannin-stained water. Bettas from this region display subtler colours that suit the dark aesthetic, but far more interesting behaviour than store-bought varieties. Kuhli Loaches provide bottom-level activity, threading between roots and leaf litter with snake-like grace. Replicate the habitat with driftwood, dried leaves, and peat filtration for best results.
