Description

Paratilapia polleni, commonly known as the Starry Night Cichlid, is one of Madagascar’s most captivating and sought-after cichlids. Named for its shimmering pattern that resembles a night sky full of stars, this species is prized by aquarists for both its beauty and its bold personality.

The body of P. polleni is typically jet-black to deep midnight blue, covered with countless iridescent blue or white spots that glow under aquarium lighting. Mature males tend to be larger and more intensely colored, while females retain the same starry pattern but with a slightly rounder profile.

Native to freshwater rivers and lagoons of northern Madagascar, this species thrives in well-oxygenated water with plenty of hiding spaces. Despite its striking appearance, P. polleni is hardy and adaptable, making it suitable for intermediate to advanced keepers.

In behavior, the Starry Night Cichlid is territorial but intelligent, showing strong pair bonding and interesting social dynamics. They are omnivores, feeding on insects, small crustaceans, and plant matter in the wild.

A fully grown Paratilapia polleni becomes the centerpiece of any aquarium, combining elegance, power, and rarity. Its iconic star-speckled look and dynamic temperament make it a top choice for hobbyists seeking a truly unique and charismatic Madagascar cichlid.
